In the novel Dead Man's Folly, Captain Jim Warburton is the political agent of the local Member of Parliament Wilfred Masterton. Warburton is a regular guest at Nasse House. During the early part of the events in the book, he is actively involved in the organisation of the fête. Mrs Masterton uses him to settle matters such as diplomatically resolving disputes over the positioning of the tea tent. Warburton also helps Ariadne Oliver prepare the paraphenalia for her murder hunt.
In the subsequent investigation into the murder of Marlene Tucker and the disappearance of Hattie Stubbs, Warburton does not feature much because he is more or less eliminated as a plausible suspect. Besides lacking a motive, he was seen on the lawn of the house during the time of the murder.
