In the novel Murder is Easy, Jessie Rose Humbleby is the widow of Dr Humbleby, and the mother of Rose. Luke Fitzwilliam met here on two occasions as he went about investigating the strange events in Wychwood under Ashe. On both occasions, on both occasions she surprised Luke by speaking at length on the theme that "there is a lot of evil about..." To her, one must fight evil and she thought of her late husband as someone who was prepared to fight. On the second occasion she specifically fingered someone as particularly evil, which surprised Luke greatly. Mrs Humbleby saw that Luke did not believe her. But then, she added, no one believed Lavinia Pinkerton either. This led Luke to think about his encounter with Lavinia on the train, and that perhaps she might have confided in Mrs Humbleby and that their views should be taken seriously.
