In the novel Peril at End House, Jean Buckley is the wife of Giles, and mother of Maggie. She takes a more active role in the search for her daughter's murderer, than her husband does.
Mrs Buckley is described as "a woman of character, tall and fair and showing very plainly her northern ancestry".
She writes to Poirot, enclosing a letter that Maggie wrote to her upon her arrival at St Loo. In the letter, Maggie mentions that she does not see why Nick should have telegraphed for her to come on Monday, when Tuesday would have done just as well. From this, Poirot deduced that Maggie had already been coming to St Loo on Tuesday, but that Nick had hidden this fact from him.
Portrayals[]
Jean Buckley does not appear on screen in ITV's 1990 TV film adaptation. However, Japp does mention he must go and have a word with Maggie's parents, implying that they had come down to St. Loo presumably for the inquest.
In the NHK anime adaptation The Mystery of End House, Jean Buckley has a slightly larger role and possibly more lines than in the original, although the first name Jean is not used. She and her husband came down to St. Loo after Maggie was murdered. Later Poirot goes up to Yorkshire to visit Rev and Mrs Buckley. There Mrs Buckley shows Poirot Maggie's room, especially a drawer full of her letters and allowed Poirot to read them. She also told Poirot that Maggie was very shy but Nick had taken her travelling to various places. The voice actress behind the character is not credited.
