In the novel The Man in the Brown Suit, Jarvis is the butler of Sir Eustace Pedler at The Mill House. Jarvis is briefly mentioned in Sir Eustace's diary. Shortly before departing for South Africa, a man came to see Sir Eustace and declined to give his name. Sir Eustace asked Jarvis to send him away. However Jarvis came back to tell Sir Eustace that the man claimed to come from Augustus Milray. As Milray had wanted Sir Eustace to do some important business on behalf of the government, Sir Eustace was willing to see the man.
