In the novel Crooked House, Janet Wolmer is the parlourmaid at Three Gables. Some time before he died, Aristide Leonides had gathered his family in a room with room. He described the terms of his will, and then summoned Johnson, his valet and Janet to act as witnesses. Aristide signed the will and the two witnesses signed after him, although they could not see the terms because Aristide had covered it with a piece of paper. The rest of the family were in the room the entire time.

There was therefore a mystery when it was discovered after Aristide's death, that whatever had been signed, it was not the will which Aristide had instructed his solicitor Mr Gaitskill to prepare.
