In the novella Murder in the Mews, Jane Plenderleith was the friend of Barbara Allen. They had met on a Nile cruise and became great friends and later shared a house at 14 Bardsley Garden Mews.

On the morning after Guy Fawkes night, Jane had returned from a stay in the country with some friends, the Bentincks. She let herself into her house, went first to her own room, and then to that of her friend's. She knocked and getting no response, suspected something was wrong and so called the police.

Jane was described as a dark efficient-looking woman of twenty-seven or twenty-eight with admirable self-possession. Her calm demeanour after discovering the death of her friend was noticed by all, although Japp found her "too cocky by half".
