In the short story Jane in Search of a Job, Jane Cleveland is a twenty-six year old, unemployed woman. Impoverished, behind in her rent payments and desparately in need of money, she answers an advert in a newspaper for a job. Despite being far down in the queue, she actually secures the post. She is is employed to impersonate Grand Duchess Pauline of Ostrova. She believes the explanation that this is all for security reasons. Her adventures can be read here.
This is the first of many characters with the name "Jane", the most notable in later stories would, of course by Jane Marple. In almost every case, the person is a lead character in the story.
