In the short story The Girdle of Hyppolita, James Elliot is a passenger on the same train from London to Paris as the one from which the English schoolgirl Winnie King disappeared. He was in the same carriage as the girl and Detective Inspector Hearn considered him a plausible suspect. Hearn told Poirot that Elliot had a bad reputation. The police suspected him of various questionable transactions but he had never been involved in kidnapping.
