In the short story The Cornish Mystery, Jacob Radnor is a young man, who was fond of Freda Stanton. He flirted with her aunt, who became smitten with him. This led to the two women having a row.

He and Freda got engaged, and he tried to get rid of Freda's aunt and had her uncle framed for the murder so that she would inherit their money.

After the death of Mrs Pengelley, Radnor told Poirot that he would not say anything about what he knew about the circumstances. He wanted to "hush things up". He had a successful tailor/outfitter business in the town and he didn't want to rock the boat. However Poirot told him that he would not succeed in hushing things up because of the "vox populi".
