In the novel The Pale Horse, Inspector Lejeune is the investigating officer in the murders involving The Pale Horse.

An imaginative policeman, he went along with the police surgeon Jim Corrigan's curiosity about the list of names found in the shoe of Father Gorman and soon surmised that there was some significance to the names on it. He also accepted help from Mark Easterbrook.

Lejeune is described as a sturdy man with dark hair and grey eyes. "He had a misleadingly quiet manner, but his gestures were sometimes surprisingly graphic and betrayed his French Huguenot ancestry."
