In the novel The Secret of Chimneys, Inspector Badgworthy is an officer of the local police in Market Basing, near Chimneys.

He was "in seventh heaven" when Lord Caterham called to report a murder at Chimneys. Badgworthy had never had a murder case since Tom Pearse but that "wasn't murder at all, but drink". Badgworthy thought he might make a name for himself with this latest murder "if Scotland Yard doesn't come butting in". Of course he was to be disappointed.
