In the novel Elephants Can Remember, Sir Hugo Fothergill is a cousin of Julia Carstairs. Since he had spent time in Malacca, and had known the Ravenscrofts well, Julia told Ariadne Oliver that he might remember something. When Ariadne met him, he mostly spoke of a family named Barnet, whose child had died in an accident. As this was nothing to do with the Ravenscrofts, Mrs Oliver considered Sir Hugo quite "an old pet--but useless as a source of information".
