Hubert Curtain is a non-canonical character created for ITV's 2007 adaptation of the novel At Bertram's Hotel. He is the solicitor of Sir Richard Blake. After Sir Richard was declared legally dead, Curtain presided at the reading of his will which was held at Bertram's Hotel. The will left, among other things, one third of the estate to the "Blake Foundation for the Arts" of which Curtain was to be executor.
As events unfolded, it was revealed that Curtain had been illegally defrauding the Blake estate. Bess Sedgwick and Elvira Blake discovered this when they paid a surprise visit to Curtain's office and caught him in the act of trying to burn some papers. Enough documents remained to show that Curtain had been acting dishonestly. While this was happening, Inspector Larry Bird also arrived on the basis of an "anonymous" tip off. He found a letter threatening the life of Bess Sedgwick and promptly arrested Curtain for the manslaughter of Micky Gorman.
During the denouement, Miss Marple also revealed that Curtain was collaborating with the hotel manager Mr Humfries in running a ratline (escape route) for ex-Nazi fugitives. Curtain handled the financial aspect of the operation. The fugitives, known as "Blake Guests" (see Herman Koch for details) paid for their passage by handing over artwork which the Nazis had looted during the war. Curtain would then oversee the sale of these works to interested buyers. When a buyer showed up, a piece of artwork would be moved to Curtain's office for the potential buyer to inspect. During the raid on Curtain's office, Jane Cooper, who was accompanying Inspector Bird, identified a painting as having come from the hotel because the frame had a unique t-shaped scratch on it. Bird had the painting examined by experts who asserted that it was a genuine Rembrandt.
The letter found by Bird was later shown to be a plant by Bess Sedgwick herself. But Curtain likely still remained in custody for his other crimes.
