Hotel Pino d'Oro is a hotel fronting the Bay of Pollensa (or Pollença) on the northern coast of the Spanish island of Majorca (or Mallorca). The hotel is featured in the short story Problem at Pollensa Bay. Parker Pyne had come to Majorca for a holiday but couldn't find a room at Palma and is forced to drive to Formentor. On the way, he passes this hotel and desides he must stay there and fortunately found a room. The hotel is described as "a small hotel standing on the edge of the sea looking out over a view that in the misty haze of a fine morning had the exquisite vagueness of a Japanese print."
Possible inspiration[]
The hotel is probably modeled after the actual Hotel Illa d’Or. Agatha Christie stayed there in March 1932. She came to the hotel, reportedly under the same circumstances as Parker Pyne in the story. She had arrived at Palma and failed to find a hotel room. She then travelled towards Formentor and passed Pollensa Bay where she spotted the hotel and decided to stay there.
