In the novel Absent in the Spring, Horley is a farmer who owns the Little Mead farm. He neglected the farm and this resulted in his farm being put up for sale at a cheap price. Rodney Scudamore who dreams of becoming a farmer wants to buy the farm but Joan Scudamore dissuades him.
