At the beginning of the short story The Lemesurier Inheritance, Hastings and Poirot have dinner at the Carlton with Higginson, apparently to thank Poirot for some job he had done for the War Office. Hastings describes Higginson as a "brass hat" (a high ranking military officer). Higginson had to rush away shortly after the dinner. Later Hastings and Poirot met Roger Lemesurier who told them that he had heard of Poirot from Higginson. According to Roger, Poirot was "a whale on psychology".
