In the short story How Does Your Garden Grow?, Henry Delafontaine was the husband of Mary, the niece of Amelia Barrowby. He and his wife had been embezzling her aunt's money, investing her securities to make money for themselves. They later found out that Amelia had found out and had engaged Poirot to investigate. Doing away with Amelia thus became a matter of urgency.

Portrayals[]

Henry Delafontaine was played by Tim Wylton in the film adaptation of How Does Your Garden Grow? in Series 3 of ITV's Agatha Christie's Poirot. There he was also portrayed as an alcoholic. In the original story, Henry made some references to possible involvement of "reds" and "bolshies" in the murder of Amelia Barrowby, since her companion was a Russian, Katrina Rieger. In the adaptation, these remarks are also featured but it is not clear whether this was part of a plan to cast suspicion and frame Katrina or the mere rantings of a habitually drunk alcoholic.
