In the novel They Came to Baghdad, Henry "Fakir" Carmichael was a British agent on the run. He was found dying in Victoria Jones' room at Tio Hotel in Baghdad. He was educated at Eton, where he got his nickname.

Being the son of a Government Official in Kashgar, he spoke arabic, kurdish, persian, armenian, hindustani, turkish and several mountain dialects. He also has an ability to blend in among the locals in Iraq and other places. In the hunt for him several men (one English, two Kurdish and one Armenian) were killed after they had been misstaken to be Carmichael.
