In the novel Postern of Fate, Hannibal is a Manchester Terrier, and belongs to Tommy and Tuppence. He plays a significant role in the plot and it almost appears like he is a lead character. There is a section written "in first person" from a dog's point of view and the book closes with him being made "a count of the realm" for his contributions.

Hannibal is believed to be based on Bingo, one of Agatha Christie's pet Manchester Terriers.[1]

Hannibal is not the first dog owned by the Beresfords – Tommy reminisces about their former dog James, a rather obstinate creature.
