In the novel The Man in the Brown Suit, Hampsley Cavern is a buried cave close to the village of Little Hampsley. The cave is rich in deposits of Aurignacian culture. Professor Beddingfeld chose to live in Little Hampsley because it was near to the Hampsley Caverns and spent much time there excavating for artefacts with the local vicar. One cold day, the Professor took off his muffler and overcoat to undertake excavations and returned home without them. He caught double pneumonia and died days later.
Hampsley Cavern is believed to be based on Kents Cavern near Torquay in Devon. Agatha Christie mentions that prehistoric wooly rhinoceros and cave bear remains had been found at Hampsley Cavern, which is an accurate of Kents Cavern.
