In the novel Mrs McGinty's Dead, Superintendent Spence tells Poirot that in his experience he has come across a number of murder cases which were not so straight-forward. Among the names mentioned was old Guterman. Guterman was shot by a group of men. Spence does not elaborate as to whether here the murderers got off despite being guilty or whether the murderers got their just deserts despite the complexities of the case.
