In the novel The Moving Finger, Inspector Graves comes down from London to Lymstock to help in investigating the anonymous letters being received in the village. He is an expert on anonymous letter cases and had helped Superintendent Nash two years earlier on another case.
Graves was described as a "tall lantern-jawed man in plain clothes" and had a deep lugubrious voice like a "depressed bloodhound".
