In the novel After the Funeral, Gordon Abernethie was the fifth child of Cornelius Abernethie and younger brother of Richard Abernethie. Gordon and his wife Pamela had one daughter, Susan. Both Gordon and Pamela were deceased by the time of the events in the book. Gordon had died during the war (the novel is set in the years following the end of World War Two).
