In the novel Sleeping Murder, Gladys Galbraith lives with her old father, whom she cares for, in Calcutta Lodge in Dillmouth. She is described as a thin middle-aged woman with suspicious eyes. When Giles and Gwenda Reed first arrived at the house, Gladys received them with suspicion because she thought they were trying to sell things. She told them that she herself had no involvement with her father's real estate business and did not know a Major Halliday. She did, however, allow them to see her elderly father although she advised them that: "He doesn't take much notice nowadays, and his memory's very shaky."
