In the short story The Under Dog, Gladys is the third housemaid of the Astwell family. She looked after Lily Margrave as part of her duties.
Portrayals[]
Gladys is played by Lucy Davidson in the film adaptation of the story in Series 5 of ITV's Agatha Christie's Poirot. Among her additional roles in the adaptation, she discovered the body of Sir Reuben Astwell. In this adaptation, Lady Astwell did not notice Trefusis breaking a knife. Here it was discovered by Gladys. While cleaning the dining table, she cut herself on a piece of metal which turned out to be the broken off point of a knife embedded on the tabeltop. In this case, according to Poirot, it was opposite the position occupied by Victor Astwell. This broken off knife played no further role in the elucidation of the identity of the murderer.
