In the novel The Murder at the Vicarage, Gladys is the kitchen maid at Old Hall. She overheard some of the discussion between Lucius Protheroe and Mrs Lestrange, and told Lawrence Redding about it, after he had promised that he would not tell anyone, and that it would not be brought up against her in a court of law. She said that the conversation between Colonel Protheroe and Mrs Lestrange had not been peaceful, with her wanting him to do something, and him refusing.
