In the novel Murder in Mesopotamia, Dr Giles Reilly is a doctor in Hassanieh, and a longtime friend of Poirot. He has a daughter named Sheila. When Dr Leidner was looking for a nurse to look after his wife at his archaeological dig at Tell Yarimjah, Dr Reilly recommended Amy Leatheran.

Dr Reilly is described as a "black-haired, long-faced man who said all sorts of funny things in a low, sad voice". According to Nurse Leatheran, the worst of him is that one never knows whether he is joking or not. She met him on the boat, when she was travelling to Baghdad with Mary Kelsey, and he enjoyed making extraordinary statements to see if she would believe them.
