In the short story The Bird with the Broken Wing, Gerard Annesley is the husband of Mabelle Annesley. Together with Mr Satterthwaite, they are guests at a dinner party at Laidell organised to serve as the setting for the announcement of the engagement of Madge Keeley to Roger Graham. In contrast to Mabelle, who has, in Satterthwaite's view, a mysterious quality of "enchantment", Gerard comes across as "a fair man with a stupid, rather wooden face", someone whom Satterthwaite hardly notices at the dinner table. Gerard claims to be asleep through the most important events in the story. He had turned in early after dinner and did not hear his wife enter her room even though the connecting door was not locked.
