In the novel A Pocket Full of Rye, Gerald Wright is a schoolmaster and boyfriend of Elaine. After the death of Rex Fortescue, Elaine sends him a telegram, and he comes to Baydon Heath, where he stays at the Golf Hotel.

Gerald is described as a "thin, intellectual and very superior young man".

Six or seven months before the events of the novel, Gerald and Elaine had been engaged. However, her father would not consent to it. Gerald felt that he was victimized for his political opinions, and he broke off the engagement because he could not sacrifice his political beliefs and convictions for money.

After the death of Rex Fortescue, Gerald and Elaine planned to get married, and use the money he had left her to start a school. They had heard of a suitable house for sale in Cornwall, and would need the money to renovate it.

Portrayals[]

The entire Gerald Wright-Elaine Fortescue side plot does not appear in the BBC 1985 adaptation of the novel which formed part of the Miss Marple series.

In the ITV 2008 adaptation of the novel (Episode 1, Season 4 of Agatha Christie's Marple), the part of Gerald Wright is played by Chris Larkin.
