In the short story The Manhood of Edward Robinson, Gerald Champneys is a friend of Jimmy Folliot and Lady Noreen Elliot. Folliot and Noreen were partners in a "theft for fun" scheme in which people, seeking excitement, drew lots to commit robberies on selected people as part of a bet. Jimmy was responsible for creating a diversion while Noreen committed the theft. Jimmy was then supposed to pick Noreen up at a certain location. However Jimmy had sprained his ankle and had to be carried home. He called Noreen to say that he had sent Gerald Champneys to pick her up.
Gerald has a brother, Edward Champneys, who was in Scotland at the time of the events in the story.
