In the Tommy and Tuppence short story The Clergyman's Daughter/The Red House, Gerald is one of two men who are suitors for Monica Deane. The other, Mr Partridge is wealthy but Monica prefers Gerald. He is a capable engineer and Monica believes that if he only had a little capital, is firm would take him into partnership. Although it is not stated explicitly how the relationship ended up, Tuppence suggests that the successful conclusion of the case would allow Gerald to marry Monica.

In LWT's 1983 TV adaptation of The Clergyman's Daughter, Gerald is given a surname "Rush". Like in the original, he is a capable but poor engineer. There are a few scenes where he is shown arriving in a car to pick up Monica. Monica proudly tells Tommy and Tuppence that Gerald had built the car himself. Gerald has an expanded role in the adaptation. Here, the Beresfords know that they have been overheard and spied upon in their efforts to uncover a hidden treasure in the Red House. When it came time to dig up the treasure, the Beresfords arranged for Gerald and Albert Batt to mount guard and provide protection in case they should be interefered with. In the event, Gerald got knocked out by Crockett and it is left to Albert to save the day.
The episode ends with Monica announcing that she and Gerald are engaged. Tommy praises Gerald for proposing marriage even though he shoudll be feeling rather groggy from being knocked out. Privately, Moniica tells Tuppence that she was the one who asked Gerald to marry. She was afraid that, given her wealth from the newly found treasure, he might be reticent because he had a lot of masculine pride.
Gerald Rush is portrayed by Alan Jones. He has a fair bit of scripted foreground action but does not actually have any lines.
