In the novel The Body in the Library, George Bartlett is a guest at the Majestic Hotel in Danemouth. He has a stammer, and was the last person to see Ruby Keene alive. His car (a Minoan Fourteen) was stolen and was found burning, with the body of a girl in it.

George is described as a "thin lanky youth with a prominent Adam's apple and an immense difficulty in saying what he meant". When the police interview him, he is so worked up that they have difficulty getting a calm statement out of him.

On the night of Ruby's disappearance, she danced with George after her exhibition dance with Raymond Starr. George talked to her, but she did not say much. She was yawning, and said she had a headache, so she left George and went upstairs.
