In the short story The Case of the Missing Lady, Gabriel Stavansson is a noted explorer. At the beginning of the story, he has just returned from a two year expedition to the arctic regions. Coming home two weeks ahead of schedule, he decided to pay a surprise visit on his fiancee Hermione Leigh Gordon who was staying with her aunt Lady Susan Clonray. However, to Stavansson's surprise, Lady Susan told him that Hermione had gone to Northumberland to visit friends and was very vague about her whereabouts.
Stavansson proceeded to Northumberland but found that the information Lady Susan had given him were all wrong. Of three addresses, only the people at one of them were expecting Hermione and none of them had seen her. Later Lady Susan showed Stavansson a telegram purportedly from Hermione saying that she had gone to Monte Carlo but Stavansson was not satisfied. He proceeded to the village of Maldon where the the telegram had been sent but failed to find any sign of her. Worried that something had happened, Stavansson consulted The International Detective Agency.
