In the novel The Sittaford Mystery, Forder is a tradesman in the town of Exhampton, six miles from the village of Sittaford on the northern edge of Dartmoor.

According to Miss Percehouse, Forder keeps a charabanc and hires it out to people who needed a ride from Exhampton into places in Dartmoor such as Sittaford. Mrs Willett and her daughter Violet Willett arrived on Forder's charabanc. After the murder of Captain Trevelyan, Miss Percehouse also saw Forder's charabanc bringing up a number of journalists to Sittaford from Exhampton.

It appears this charabanc service was also used by tourists. According to Captain Wyatt, characbancs came up to Sittaford with tourists in the summer time. There was a morning run from Exhampton which cost three and sixpenny. This trip included an ascent of Sittaford Beacon with a halt halfway up from Exhampton for light refreshments.
