In the short story The Gate of Baghdad, Flight Lieutenant Williamson is an R.A.F. officer travelling from Damascus to Baghdad on the same bus as Parker Pyne. At Rutbah he overheard Captain Smethurst telling someone that he dod not want to "let a pal down" and that he would hold his tongue until Baghdad but not later. Williamson did not see who Smethurst was talking to but it led to speculation as to who among the passengers on the bus was a "pal" of Smethurst and therefore his likely murderer.

Williamson was not featured in the radio dramatization of the story on BBC Radio 4. The role of overhearing this scrap of conversation was given to Captain O'Rourke.
