In the novel At Bertram's Hotel, Fanny Godfrey was a cousin of Miss Marple. She spoke with a stutter, "I have got t-t-t-wo s-s-s-potz...." When Miss Marple saw a white sports car outside Bertram's Hotel with the licence plate FAN2266, the letters FAN and repeated 2 and 6 made her associate it with her cousin. Later she saw the same number plate outside Battersea Park. The car turned out to belong to Ladislaus Malinowski. Miss Marple was able to report the number plate with great certainty to Chief Inspector Davy because of the strong association with her cousin's name and characteristic way of talking.
