In the short story The House at Shiraz, Lady Esther Carr is a young woman who travelled to Shiraz with her companion, Muriel King. Some time later Miss King suddenly died, and Lady Esther started to isolate herself. A young German pilot, who had fallen in love with Muriel, believed Esther had murdered her.
Later it turned out that Esther was the one who had died. After she accidentally fell to her death Muriel pretended to be her, to be able to stay in Shiraz.
