The Emmanuel Church was a church in the Clifton area of Bristol. Built in the 1860s, the church was located on Guthrie Road, close to Clifton College, where Archibald Christie's stepfather, William Hemsley, was a schoolmaster. On Christmas Eve 1914, after some hurried preparations, Agatha Miller and Archibald Christie were married at the church.[1][2]
The church became disused in the 1970s and was demolished and flats for the elderly (today's Emmanuel Court) were built on the site. However the old church tower was retained and formed part of the new building.
Photos of the Emmanuel Church are scarce. This aerial photo shows part of Clifton in 1921. In the centre are the buildings of Clifton College. At the upper right is Emmanuel Church with its square tower. Photo is courtesy of Britain from Above. Source: britainfromabove.org.uk/en/image/EPW005467
