In the novel At Bertram's Hotel, Mrs Emma Wheeling is a woman living in the village of Milton St. John. She and her husband found the unconscious Canon Pennyfather by the side of the road. When they saw that he was a clergyman they took him into their home. They called Dr Stokes to have a look at him. However, they did not call the police, as they thought the Canon might not like that.
At the end of the novel, Chief-Inspector Fred Davy suggests that Mrs Wheeling and her husband may have been associates of the gang conducting organised robberies. However, this is never confirmed.
