In the novel The Murder at the Vicarage, Elwell was a resident of St. Mary Mead. Elwell's daughter, a pretty ethereal girl, tried to stifle her little brother. Miss Marple mentioned him as one village parallel that came to mind when the vicar asked her what the murder of Colonel Protheroe reminded her of, although she did not go on to explain how the parallel was linked.
