In the novel They Came to Baghdad, Mrs Elsie Pauncefoot Jones (née Scheele) is the wife of Dr Pauncefoot Jones, and the sister of Anna Scheele. She lives at 17 Elmsleigh Gardens in Kensington. She is expected at some later time in the near future to visit the dig of Dr Pauncefoot Jones at Tell Aswad but in the early part of the novel, she first has to undergo an operation at a nursing home in Portland Place.

At the end of the novel, a certain Mrs Elsie Pauncefoot Jones does arrive at Baghdad but she turns out to be Anna Scheele, who has travelled there using her sister's passport, having beaten the efforts by operatives of "The New Order" trying to stop her. It was never revealed whether the operation in the nursing home was genuine or part of an elaborate counter-surveillance tactic to allow Anna to evade Sanders of the River who was following her. Nor are we told if the actual Mrs Elsie Pauncefoot Jones did visit her husband at his dig.
