In the short story The Stymphalean Birds, Elsie Clayton is a young woman of about 25 and a fellow guest of Harold Waring at a hotel at Lake Stempka in Herzoslovakia. She was holidaying there with her mother Mrs Rice and befriended Waring. It later turned out that she was conspiring with her mother to blackmail Waring.
Elsie Clayton is described as a young woman, pretty "in a rather old-fashioned style."
