In the short story The Shadow on the Glass, Elliot was the former owner of Greenway's House, now in the possession of the Unkertons during the events in the story. According to Mr Satterthwaite, one of Elliot's ancestors was a cavalier. His wife had a roundhead lover who killed the husband in the upstairs bedroom by the west wall. The lovers fled but as they looked back they thought they saw the face of the dead husband at the window watching them. This gave rise to the legend of the window. Apparently a certain pane of glass in the window had an irregular stain which from far away gives the effect of a man's face looking out.
Richard Scott was apparently a friend of Elliot. He said that he used to stay at Greenway's when Elliot still owned the house. Subsequently Elliot sold the house and it passed eventually to the Unkertons.
