In the short story The Soul of the Croupier, Elizabeth Martin is one of a party of American tourists in Monte Carlo. Originally from the town of Sargon Springs, Elizabeth on on her first tour of Europe. Mr Satterthwaite who meets her at Monte Carlo notes that she is not like some tourists who "pass through Paris and emerge clothed as the Queen of Sheba". She was "doing Europe" in a "stern, conscientious spirit". "She had high ideas of culture and art and she was anxious to get as much as possible for her limited store of money." As such she dresses in simple travelling clothes, sensible walking shoes and carries a guide book. Part of her problem is that she is interested in a fellow American tourist Franklin Rudge but he appears to be swept off his feet by meeting Countess Czarnova. How Satterthwaite and Harley Quin helps her forms part of the main plot of the story.
