In the novel Sad Cypress, Edward John Marshall is a witness from New Zealand as to the identity of Mary Draper.

Edward had lived for some years in Auckland, New Zealand, where he had known Mary Draper for years. He now resides at 14 Wren Street, Deptford. He is called as a witness during Elinor Carlisle's trial, where he testifies that he has seen Mary in court that day, although she called herself a different name.
