In the novel 4.50 from Paddington, Edmund Crackenthorpe was the eldest child of Luther Crackenthorpe. He died in the early days of the Second World War. Shortly before he died he wrote to his family, telling them he intended to marry a French woman named Martine. Emma Crackenthorpe says that she was very fond of Edmund, and that he was her favourite brother. Dr Morris had also known Edmund, and considered him the best of the Crackenthorpe family. He said that Edmund was goodhearted, gay, and a nice boy.
