In the short story The Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan, Ed Opalsen was a rich stockbroker who had made a fortune during an oil boom. He spent large amounts of money buying jewels for his wife among which was a necklace of beautifully matched and expensive pearls.

Ed Opalsen was played by Trevor Cooper in the film adaptation of The Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan in Series 5 of ITV's Agatha Christie's Poirot drama series. There his occupation was changed from that of a stockbroker to an impresario. He had purchased the necklace for 500 thousand Francs for his wife to wear on stage during the performance of a play he had put on.

In the NHK's anime adaptation The Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan, the character of Mr Opalsen is voiced by Masaru Ikeda.
