In the novel Nemesis, Dr Stokes is a doctor from Jocelyn St. Mary who acted as the coroner at the inquest of the death of Elizabeth Temple which was held at the "Curfew Arms". Dr Stokes was described as a middle-aged man with greying hair and spectacles. He is likely a local resident as he appeared to have a fair amount of local knowledge. When Joanna Crawford testified that she had seen someone pushing a boulder at "a sort of great patch of boulders on the side of the hill," Dr Stokes said that he knew exactly which place she was referring to. It was a place the locals called "The Wethers" or "The Grey Wethers".
