In the short story The Bird with the Broken Wing, Dr Morrise is a doctor who arrives with Inspector Winkfield in response to the death of Mabelle Annesley at Laidell. He examines the body and comes to the conclusion that she had been murdered and had not committed suicide as she appeared to have done. The rope around her neck was not the rope she was strangled with--something much thinner, like a wire, had been used. It had cut right into the flesh and the mark of the rope was superimposed on it. She had been strangled and then hung up on the door to look like suicide.
