In the short story The Harlequin Tea Set, Dr Horton is doctor in the village of Kingsbourne Ducis. Years earlier he married Maria, the younger of two daughters of Mr Satterthwaite's friend Tom Addison. Maria died in childbirth, leaving Dr Horton to bring up their daughter Inez. Mr Satterthwaite thought of Horton as a nice and kindly man, a good reliable general practitioner, "unambitious but reliable". He seemed to Satterthwaite to be devoted to his daughter and immensely proud of her.
